It has been revealed exactly how West Brom players felt about Eric Ramsay following his recent dismissal at the Hawthorns

West Bromwich Albion are on the lookout for a third permanent manager of the 2025/26 Championship campaign in order to help the Black Country outfit avoid relegation to League One after parting ways with Eric Ramsay on Tuesday evening.

Ramsay's tenure at the Hawthorns lasted no longer than a mere 44 days, with the former Manchester United coach failing miserably following his arrival from MLS side Minnesota United as Ryan Mason's successor just last month.

Though Mason himself flattered to deceive in charge of West Brom, Ramsay's appointment proved to represent an unmitigated disaster for all parties as the Welshman failed to win any of his nine matches in the job before being relieved of his duties in the immediate aftermath of a disappointing 1-1 home draw with 18th-placed Charlton Athletic.

That result left the Baggies in 21st position, just one point above Leicester City in the final relegation spot following the Foxes' recent six-point deduction.

With just 12 fixtures of the season now to spare, the prospect of dropping down to English football's third-tier for only the third time in the club's history is now an eerily-real, and ever-growing possibility, one which Ramsay will have to assume a fair degree of accountability for if that scenario plays out come May.

How West Brom players actually felt about Eric Ramsay in disastrous Baggies stint

Following Ramsay's recent sacking, it has been revealed exactly how West Brom's squad felt about the 34-year-old during his brief reign in charge.

In a stunning report from Tom Collomosse of the Daily Mail, which also revealed the Baggies' bizarre hiring process of Ramsay after identifying the head coach as a strong contender before opting with Mason and then electing him as the right man for the job in January amid fears of relegation, it has emerged that Albion players were often left confused by the methods of the ex-boss.

The decision to utilise mercurial winger Mikey Johnston at wing-back was noted as a particular point of puzzlement within the camp, which, given the Republic of Ireland international's haul of nine assists as one of few precious bright sparks at the Hawthorns this term, should come as no real surprise.

Supporters were vocal regarding the collective bemusement at Ramsay's modus operandi, with radical changes being implemented without success or any logical reason, and it's not that shocking that players were very much of the same school of thought.

As per Collomose's report, Albion players did not necessarily "down tools" under Ramsay. However, it's said that they felt he tried to change too much too quickly, and were unsure of their own requirements from the former Minnesota United boss.

The aforementioned decision on Johnston reportedly "left many puzzled", and serves as a damning indictment of the lack of buy-in and authority that Ramsay earned in his fleeting stay with the relegation-threatened Championship side.

The problems at West Brom run deeper than Eric Ramsay

It's not what the West Brom faithful will want to hear, though the overwhelming majority remain in little doubt that the Baggies' shortcomings are fundamentally deeper-rooted than managerial shortcomings, which casts serious scrutiny and doubt over the club's key decision-makers and its long-term future.

There has been a distinct lack of strategy in terms of both managerial and player recruitment, while the playing squad must also take ownership for failing to get going under a series of bosses now.

Indeed, since Carlos Corberan, no manager has been able to get a tune out of this squad, with supporters often questioning the fight, resilience and commitment of many in blue and white.

The decision to part ways with Ramsay was, of course, incredibly justified, and hiring him in the first place considering the Baggies' position represents an ill-thought-out call, and Albion must now appoint somebody capable of gaining instant results and buy-in before ripping up the playbook, revamping the squad and starting all over again in the summer.
