Eddie Howe has claimed Sandro Tonali is in a “much better place” following his return for Newcastle.

The Italy international has made three appearances since a ten-month ban for betting breaches during his time at Milan ended in late August.

He also featured during his country’s Nations League fixtures during the September break after receiving a swift recall by Luciano Spalletti.

And Howe believes that Tonali’s readjustment period has put him in contention for  a starring role in the Magpies’ Premier League trip to Fulham.

“I think Sandro is in a much better place,” said Howe.

“The international games really helped him. He’s certainly pushing to start but I want everyone pushing to start. He was very good against Wolves.

“We have really good competition for places in midfield.”

The Newcastle manager also revealed that Callum Wilson will not make the trip to the capital while Alexander Isak is doubtful due to an eye graze suffered against Wolves.

He added: “It was a strange one with his eye, the ball just grazed it.

“We felt at the time that was the main reason for him coming off the pitch. Then he had a knock to his foot as well so it’s a combination of the two. We’ll make a decision today.

“Callum Wilson won’t make the game. I think we’re looking with Callum at the next international break we hope to have him back in full training.

“That leaves Anthony Gordon, who did a really good job against Wolves, and Will Osula, who has done really well since he’s been with us.

“I know he hasn’t played any minutes yet but we’ve been delighted with his progress – he’s got all the tools – so we feel we’ve got good cover.”

Howe’s side currently sit third in the Premier League table after putting together a four-game unbeaten start.
