Huddersfield Town told to only sell Joe Taylor on three conditions

FLW'S Huddersfield fan pundit expresses his views on the rumours linking Joe Taylor with a permanent move away from the Accu Stadium

After impressing on loan at Wigan Athletic in the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, it seemed that Joe Taylor was going to return to Huddersfield Town to be their main line-leader under new manager Martin Drury.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case, as the Terriers are, according to Alan Nixon, open to a permanent sale for the 23-year-old, but only if they're able to recoup the £3 million that they spent to bring him to the club from Luton Town in January 2025.

Nixon outlined that Wigan are interested, but may struggle to meet the financial demands set out by Huddersfield, and reports elsewhere have suggested that Michael Skubala may be open to a reunion at Bristol City, after the pair worked together to great effect at Lincoln City in 2024.

Either way, it would be a blow for the West Yorkshire outfit to lose Taylor this summer, as he showed at Wigan that, if he gets the right opportunity and is playing in an environment that benefits him, he could be that 20+ goal striker that every promotion-hopeful craves.

Ultimately, though, a player should never be held hostage at a club, and if Taylor believes that he's better off playing elsewhere, and the right offer comes in, Huddersfield may be powerless to stop a sale.

FLW's Terriers fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, hopes that the 23-year-old will remain at the Accu Stadium, as he, like every League One fan, saw the frontman back to his best in the right environment at Wigan in the latter half of the recent season.

"Selling Joe Taylor could be the right move, but it would depend on a few things," he said. "If he is remotely interested in staying at the club and Martin Drury rates him as someone who would fit the way we want to play, then we should absolutely keep him.

"He showed in his stint at Wigan that, if his mentality is right, and the football being played around him is right for his style, he is more than capable of being a prolific goalscorer in League One, which is something we need.

"So, if we can have a clean slate and have a situation where he feels we're being set up to suit him, and he's getting opportunities, which seemed to be the problem in the previous era, then we should keep him."

Rayner isn't completely against the idea of selling Taylor, but feels that certain criteria have to be met surrounding the happiness of the player and the willingness of the new manager to utilise him in a way that will get the best out of him.

Above all, though, the money has to be right to sanction a sale, and the fan pundit doesn't want to see his club lose out on at least breaking even on the striker.

"We should only sell him if three things apply," he continued. "Those three things are, if he doesn't want to be there, if Drury doesn't want him and if the price is right.

"If any of those three things aren't right, realistically, it is a difficult one.

"If Drury doesn't think he's right for the system and the price is right, then sell him. If he wants to stay, and Drury wants him to stay, then keep him. But if he wants to go and the money is not right, then keep him, and he should be professional and do a good job.

"I'm genuinely conflicted about it, because I think he could be a real asset if the conditions are right."

Joe Taylor's future may end up elsewhere — but only if the right offer comes in

It's safe to say that Huddersfield hasn't been the most positive place in the year that Taylor has been there. A lot of the frustration in the first half of this past season, though, was arguably down to Lee Grant not utilising the frontman during his time in the dugout.

Regardless, that environment at the Accu Stadium may have soured the 23-year-old's desire to come back and be the talisman at his parent club, even if things may be set to change under Martin Drury.

But Taylor still has three years remaining on his Huddersfield deal, meaning that the Terriers hold all the cards when it comes to a potential sale this summer. If their valuation isn't being met, then they won't be in any rush to accept any compromises.

We have seen highly-rated League One strikers with lots of potential move to the second tier for the £3 million that is being mooted. Just last year, Richard Kone made a move from Wycombe Wanderers to QPR for up to £5 million. Charlie Kelman, albeit a divisional move from the Hoops to Charlton Athletic, got his £3.5 million valuation from a year in League One with Leyton Orient.

Only time will tell whether potential Taylor suitors will believe he's worth that much. At 23, he still has plenty of potential, and he's coming off a campaign where he scored 15 times, despite being overlooked for half of it, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

But, if no offer comes, and Huddersfield retain him, there'll be hope he can replicate what was seen at Wigan across the Pennines next year, as the Terriers look to finally realise their promotion potential.
