France and Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike has undergone successful surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon and now faces several months out, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said.

The 23-year-old was injured in the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on 14 April and was operated on Sunday. According to L'Équipe, the procedure was overseen by the surgeon who treated basketball player Jayson Tatum, who sustained a similar injury in May 2025 and returned after nearly 10 months.

Slot said the operation went well and described it as an important first step in Ekitike’s recovery.

He cautioned that rehabilitation will be long and that there are many stages to clear before Liverpool can offer a firm timeline.

Specialists believe such injuries take several months, with recovery typically eight months to a year before a return to peak level, depending on how rehab progresses.

Slot added that Ekitike is an explosive player, which is not ideal with this type of injury, and said it is too early to know whether he could be an exception.
