Hugo Souza of Corinthians was subjected to racist abuse from Portuguesa supporters as he left the pitch at Canindé on Sunday night after the Paulistão quarter-finals. A video published by Jovem Pan captured the incident.

The goalkeeper saved two penalties in the shootout and another during normal time, sealing Corinthians’ place in the semi-finals.

Two Portuguesa fans in the stand were heard hurling insults including “favelado”, “sem dente”, “passa fome”, “piolhento” and “vai cortar esse cabelo”. A third supporter intervened, telling them to get down from the barrier.

Four military police officers were close by at the time. Portuguesa later condemned the abuse, said it is working to identify those responsible and will support the authorities on sanctions.

Corinthians issued a strong denunciation, saying the insults invoked terms historically tied to structural racism and were incompatible with sport and society. The club said it had formally asked the Federação Paulista de Futebol to investigate, identify those involved and apply sanctions.

A Secretaria de Segurança Pública de São Paulo said it had found no incident report and did not comment on the conduct of officers who witnessed the abuse.
