Hull City are advancing in their pursuit of Oli McBurnie amid competition from a number of Championship rivals
Hull City are readying a move to acquire out-of-contract striker Oli McBurnie amid stiff competition from a trio of Championship rivals in Birmingham City, Sheffield United and Swansea City.
As per a recent report from HullLive, the 29-year-old is poised to undertake talks with freshly-appointed Tigers boss Sergej Jakirovic ahead of a potential move to the MKM Stadium this summer.
The Bosnian is looking to make McBurnie one of the opening signings of his tenure after recently being appointed by Acun Ilicali as the club's successor to Ruben Selles, who was relieved of his duties despite keeping Hull in the Championship last season.
Hull will now intend to bolster their squad during the off-season and push for a higher league finish next time around, having only secured survival on goal difference ahead of 22nd-placed Luton Town.
According to the aforementioned report, Hull are hoping to make a breakthrough with McBurnie in the coming days as he prepares to hold discussions with Jakirovic following initial talks - which are described as "positive" - with the club in the wake of his departure from Spanish side Las Palmas.
The experienced frontman is available on a free transfer after exercising an exit clause in his Las Palmas contract on the condition of relegation, which has alerted a host of suitors back in the Championship.
Swansea and Sheffield United, two of McBurnie's former clubs, of course, have both been linked.
However, it's said that McBurnie is currently favouring a move to Hull as opposed to a switch back to Swansea, while any potential return to Bramall Lane just one year after leaving will be off the cards if Chris Wilder loses his job amid reports that the Blades manager is set to be dismissed.
McBurnie has also been linked with a move to big-spending Birmingham City by Alan Nixon of The Sun, who has claimed that the ambitious newly-promoted outfit are coming in with a "top cash offer". Nixon has also reported that McBurnie would "like" to remain in Spain with top-flight side Celta Vigo.
According to HullLive's report, McBurnie's salary is anticipated to be a "significant financial commitment" for the Tigers.
Despite Blues' impending lucrative offer, the report has added that both parties have already struck an agreement on financial terms and McBurnie's decision will now come down to where he believes is the best place to play his football in the 2025/26 campaign.
Should Hull complete an ever-advancing move for McBurnie, it could represent an early statement of intent in Jakirovic's reign.
McBurnie is a seasoned Championship goalscorer who has proven his class at this level with Swansea and the Blades, and at 29, his experience in both the division and knowing what it takes to get out of it would no doubt be a crucial factor on and off-the-pitch.
It's little surprise that he has no shortage of interest, and Hull's competitors could all well be in the reckoning for promotion next season. That, then, would make it a serious statement if the Tigers win the race for his signature, and it looks like they could do exactly that.
