Rotherham United have offered a new contract to influential defender Hakeem Odoffin, but there are fears that a Championship club may swoop in for the 27-year-old to take him away from the New York Stadium this summer.

The defender has been a standout performer for the Millers this season and was voted by his teammates as the club's Players’ Player of the Season, scoring seven times in all competitions in the process.

Uncertainty remains though over whether he'll commit his future to the League One club or pursue opportunities elsewhere, and whilst there are no transfer links to Odoffin at this time, there will likely be interested parties, given his performances in 2024-25.

Rotherham supporters will be wary of another potential contract saga ending in disappointment, having experienced similar situations in the past.

Most notably, in the summer of 2022, the club lost key players Michael Smith and Michael Ihiekwe to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday on free transfers after their contracts expired.

Steve Evans, who was in charge before Hamshaw's appointment, had previously acknowledged that players like Odoffin would attract interest from elsewhere.

During discussions with Odoffin in March, Evans was clear about the club's position, saying: "He'll either sign or he'll go.

"We won't be going beyond a week or two after the end of the season saying, 'Is Haks going to stay?'"

We asked FLW's Rotherham Fan Pundit, Tom Eyre, and he shared his thoughts on the situation surrounding Odoffin, and he believes that the 2021 signing from Hamilton Academical could be on the move to the Championship, with Wrexham name-dropped as a potential destination.

"I'd love for Haks to stay - captain, leader, one of the best centre halves in the league," Tom told FLW.

"I'd love for him to stay and there's potential for him to stay with being captain and all the various things that come along with that, but I can see a Championship club swaying his head," Tom told FLW.

"I can see Wrexham offering him more money than we can offer him, and for someone of his age and stature and status, I wouldn't blame him if he took the money.

"Championship football on a good wage is better than what we can offer him, so yeah, I think his head may be turned, but I'd love to see it not and for him to stay with us."

Hakeem Odoffin's Rotherham United journey could influence his contract decision

Odoffin has become a fan favorite during his four-year stay at Rotherham, overcoming a difficult first season to establish himself as one of the team's most consistent performers.

The versatile player, who can operate as both a midfielder and centre-half, has remained tight-lipped about his future for much of the season. However, there was an encouraging change in his outlook following Matt Hamshaw's appointment as manager in April, replacing Steve Evans.

Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser, Odoffin revealed, "The manager has been really good with me and allowed me to just focus on the games, which I appreciate.

"Since he came in, I've loved every second of it. When those conversations do take place, I'm sure they will be good ones. I'm receptive and open to anything."

Rotherham fans will be hoping that the appointment of Hamshaw and Odoffin's apparent receptiveness to discussions might lead to a positive outcome, but as Tom Eyre suggests, the lure of Championship football or improved financial terms elsewhere could ultimately prove decisive in determining the defender's future.
