Reading star Lewis Wing could attract interest from Championship clubs in the summer transfer window

Reading have failed in their quest to land a League One play-off spot, following consecutive defeats at the hands of Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, and Cardiff City.

The Royals sit nine points adrift of sixth-place Stevenage with just two games remaining, and haven't won since their 3-0 triumph over Wigan Athletic on 28 March.

Boss Leam Richardson has faced serious questions over his style of play, which many supporters perceive as being negative, and positive results have dried up at the business end of the season and fans are calling for change.

Regardless of whether Reading retain Richardson's managerial services, the Berkshire outfit will have to make major decisions in the transfer market this summer.

Lewis Wing future claim emerges as Reading prepare for summer transfer window

The Royals enjoyed a busy winter transfer window, acquiring the likes of Haydon Roberts, Benn Ward, Will Keane, and Ryan Nyambe.

However, those signings have not provided the sort of quality that Richardson would have liked, as Reading can no longer land a top-six finish in League One.

Following their failed play-off bid, the Select Car Leasing Stadium club are set for a vital summer transfer window, which will witness important departures as well as arrivals.

Football League World asked our Royals fan pundit, Johnny Hunt, if he thinks there's any chance that Lewis Wing will leave this summer, as the 30-year-old has been excellent and could attract interest.

Hunt told FLW: "Lewis Wing says he's happy at the club, settled with his family in the area. He's captain, he's had two good seasons for us.

"You want him to be part of the future of the club and keep developing in a positive way. Yes, there'd be interest in a player like that from Championship clubs, I'm sure.

"He'll certainly attract interest, that goes without saying, but it's not him seeking to leave, which I think is the difference. He's part of our club, and he's captain.

"We want him there, he's a game changer, as his stats prove in the league. We just need to find a squad to complement him, and build around him.

"I certainly don't want him to go, and I can't see him leaving this summer."

Lewis Wing should be keen to stay at Reading for now

Wing has proven himself as one of the best midfielders in League One, having notched 11 goals and 11 assists in 44 appearances so far this term.

Reading have struggled for consistency on the whole, but the former Wycombe Wanderers ace has been a constant source of danger for third-tier opponents.

Wing's performances suggest that he is capable of operating for a League One side who are set to compete in the play-offs, or returning to the Championship, having previously represented Rotherham United and Middlesbrough in the second tier.

However, as alluded to by Hunt, the 30-year-old is the Royals' club captain, and the Select Car Leasing Stadium side are clearly getting the best out of him.

This season's return of 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions this season is already Wing's career-best tally, and he should be confident that he can cause problems for Rotherham and Blackpool in his last two games of the campaign.

Reading should not be worried by the prospect of Wing's exit this summer, but he could seek a departure by the winter of 2027 if his side don't improve.
