One of the worst days in the history of FC Barcelona was 5 August 2021. In the morning, it looked as though Lionel Messi would put pen to paper on a new deal with the club, but by the evening, it emerged that the Argentinian maestro would leave.
It came as a cruel blow to fans around the world. It has been a major sore point since, as the Blaugrana fans were unable to give the legendary footballer the farewell he deserved. Even the player seems to share the same sentiment.
One of his best mates in the Barcelona team, who also plays with him at Inter Miami, is Jordi Alba. The Spanish left-back, who recently announced his retirement from the game, revealed on ‘El Larguero’ (via Mundo Deportivo) that Messi is also waiting for a chance to say goodbye in the right way. He said:
“He wants a tribute, and I hope it happens. He deserves it; it will be a very beautiful celebration. Everyone is waiting for that moment. He is the best in history, and Camp Nou deserves to feel his magic again.”
However, Alba does not think Messi would want the Camp Nou to be named after him. He said:
“I don’t think Leo would want that. Camp Nou is fine. Whatever is done will be positive.”
In recent days, there has been a lot of chatter about how Barcelona can celebrate Lionel Messi after the Argentinian visited the stadium a few weeks ago. Joan Laporta even hinted at building a statue for the player.
However, as special as it would be, it is highly unlikely that the Spotify Camp Nou will be named after him. It remains to be seen how Barcelona celebrate a player who gave his everything to the badge and give him a belated send-off worthy of the hero he was.
