Tottenham Hotspur saw their unbeaten start to the Europa League campaign come to an abrupt end following a 3-2 defeat against Galatasaray on Thursday.

The north Londoners came into the game brimming with confidence after back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Aston Villa in the EFL Cup and the Premier League.

They were looking to extend their winning streak to three games on the bounce and maintain their excellent start to the continental campaign, but it didn’t go according to script.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou made seven changes to the side that thrashed Villa 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last time out.

It has been a recurring theme throughout Spurs’ Europa League campaign thus far, but unlike their previous three wins, they failed to get the better of their Turkish opponents.

Galatasaray took the lead through Yunus Akgun in the sixth minute, but Tottenham’s academy star Will Lankshear repaid the manager’s faith by drawing Spurs level in the 18th minute.

Victor Osimhen netted an eight-minute brace to give Gala a commanding lead at RAMS Park, and Tottenham’s woes were compounded as goalscorer Lankshear was sent off on the hour mark.

Postecoglou made proactive changes, bringing on Dominic Solanke and Pape Matar Sarr to salvage the game, and it paid off as Solanke reduced the deficit to one goal with a sublime finish.

Tottenham pushed on for the equaliser, but their numerical disadvantage ultimately proved costly as Gala held on to inflict Spurs’ first continental defeat this season.

Before receiving his marching orders, Lankshear enjoyed a decent game.

He had just 15 touches but made a telling contribution by scoring with one of his two shots on target, but his evening turned into a nightmare after an hour, and Eni Aluko believes he succumbed to the pressure of the game.

“I feel sorry for Will Lankshear,” Aluko said (via BBC Live). “The pressure of the occasion, and I feel bad that he got sent off. It could have been a good night for him.”

Tottenham will now focus on this weekend’s Premier League action, where they take on Ipswich Town on home turf.
