Pedro Neto blasted the ball into the Fulham net in stoppage time to give Chelsea a valuable win in the Premier League top five race on Sunday.

Alex Iwobi’s excellent finish opened the scoring for the Cottagers in the 20th minute, but they were unable to hold onto their advantage for a second victory over their local rivals this season.

Teenager Tyrique George equalised within five minutes of coming off the bench at Craven Cottage, sending a well hit shot from just outside the box past Bernd Leno.

Chelsea‘s push for a winner against a tiring Fulham side came in the 93rd minute as Enzo Fernandes found Neto in the box. The Portuguese turned on a swivel before firing it into the roof of the goal, sparking scenes of pandemonium in the away end.

“I think it could be a big part of the season for us,” Neto said after the final whistle. “We showed character. To be honest, I have no words.

“It is not easy to spend all season in the top four and we were out before this game. The character the team showed, we now need to think about Everton.”

On his goal Neto added: “When I received the ball, I just spun around and shot as hard as I can. The ball went in. The first one, Leno did an unbelievable save and I was so frustrated that the second one I had to put all the power into the shot.”

The result sees Chelsea jump back into fifth in the Premier League table after dropping down to seventh following wins by Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle United on Saturday. Sixth-placed Nottingham Forest could leapfrog them with a win over Spurs on Monday night.

“The belief has always been there, even in the bad moments,” Neto continued. “Sometimes in this game it is not about the quality, it’s about the spirit and that’s what we showed today – and I think we deserved to win.”
