Matvei Safonov’s (25) arrival at Paris Saint-Germain over the summer was, on the face of it, a threat to Gianluigi Donnarumma’s (25) place in goal. The Russia international talked a big game following his move as he looked to claim the No.1 jersey. “I don’t see myself as a No.2. I don’t want to be a substitute. If they make me No.2, things won’t be easy for the No.1,” said Safonov.
Despite reports that the previous goalkeeping hierarchy reportedly being abolished over the summer, Donnarumma did, however, start the season as No.1 – just as he was last season. The Italian has, however, underwhelmed this season, particularly in the UEFA Champions League.
He was then a shock omission from the starting line-up to face RC Lens on Saturday night. Speaking post-match, Luis Enrique revealed that Donnarumma was not injured. “I want players that are ready,” was Les Parisiens’ slightly cryptic reason for leaving out to former AC Milan shot-stopper.
Having kept a clean sheet, Safonov may keep Donnarumma on the bench when PSG face Atletico Madrid in midweek, according to L’Équipe. “He was very good and it wasn’t easy for him,” said the PSG manager in reaction to the Russian’s performance in the 1-0 win over RC Lens. Time will tell whether Luis Enrique’s decision to drop the Italian goalkeeper represents a more permanent demotion.
