FC Twente starlet Ruud Nijstad has this week revealed his hopes of one day pulling on the colours of La Liga giants Barcelona.
This would come with a view to forming a defensive partnership with Blaugrana sensation Pau Cubarsí.
Stopper Cubarsí has of course spent recent weeks building on his reputation as arguably the standout young defender in world football at present.
En route to Spain booking a place in the World Cup final, the 19-year-old has been an ever-present at the heart of Luis de la Fuente’s backline. Shining on both sides of the ball, Cubarsí has struck up a stellar partnership with Aymeric Laporte, culminating in just a solitary goal conceded across seven fixtures this summer.
And as alluded to above, hopeful of forming a similarly daunting pairing with Barcelona’s young stalwart over the years ahead is Dutch sensation Ruud Nijstad.
Nijstad, for his part, is an 18-year-old central defender, who currently plies his club trade with FC Twente. Despite his tender years, the Dutchman is already a regular at senior level, widely considered a future star in his home country.
Such talents gave rise to transfer links with the aforementioned Barcelona back in January.
And as alluded to above, if the latest comments on the part of Nijstad himself are anything to go by, then he would love nothing more than to one day call himself a Blaugrana player.
Speaking during an interview with Sportnieuws, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, this week, the defender explained:
“I saw him (Cubarsí) play against Cristiano Ronaldo, and I really enjoyed watching him. I don’t expect things to move that fast for me, but playing for FC Barcelona and forming a central defence with Cubarsí would, of course, be my ultimate goal. But for now, I want to continue developing at Twente. I still have a lot to learn here.”
