Despite his recent omissions from the squad, Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni still desires a role with the Azzurri.
The 29-year-old is widely considered among the best Italian players of his generation. He has been delivering the goods for Hellas Verona and then Lazio over the past five seasons. The winger has been rewarded with the captain’s armband last summer when Ciro Immobile left the Italian capital club.
But aside from his sensational last-minute curler against Croatia in the Euro 2024, Zaccagni’s international career has been fairly uneventful. After all, that famous strike was his solitary goal for the Italian national team. He only made nine appearances since making his debut under Roberto Mancini in March 2022 at the age of 26.
Nevertheless, the Lazio skipper is still keen to carve himself a role with the Azzurri as he revealed in his interview with The Laziali Founder & TLN TV Serie A Host Steven Moore.
Well, being part of the national team is always something fantastic. My goal is always to be in the group. Obviously, we must repsect the choices of the coach but I work every day for this.
Current Italy boss Luciano Spalletti has recently dropped Zaccagni from his plans as he considers him tactically ill-suited to his 3-5-1-1 tactical system which doesn’t have room for attacking wingers.
However, the Cesena native is looking to convince otherwise ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Germany. He has certainly been in impressive form this season, contributing with nine goals and eight assists in all competitions.
