Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has leapt to the defence of Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, following recent criticism from the English media.
Bellingham has come under scrutiny for his reaction to his substitution in England’s 2-0 win over Albania on Sunday.
Manager Thomas Tuchel blasted the 22-year-old’s attitude in his post-match conference, stating that he must respect his teammates and that the incident would be removed.
The media have also criticised Bellingham’s attitude, but Wright believes he is being unfairly targeted.
He told The Overlap: “I had to do something for GQ not long ago, and I said as an Englishman, I’m an Englishman. I can’t hide from that.
“I don’t think they’re ready for a black superstar who can move like Jude [Bellingham] is moving. They can’t touch him. He goes out there, he performs, he does what he does. It’s too uppity for these people.
“They all love N’Golo Kante. He’s a humble black man who gets on with what he’s doing. But if you get a (Paul) Pogba or a Bellingham, and you get that kind of energy, that does not sit well with people.
“Someone like Jude frightens these people because of his capability and the inspiration he can give.
“Because if you are outspoken, black, and playing to that level, that frightens certain people. This guy is obsessed with him. He can’t see a black man doing what Jude is doing and not think it’s uppity.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has also backed the former Borussia Dortmund man, insisting that it is normal for a player of his quality to react angrily after being substituted.
Bellingham is one of the Three Lions’ best players, and Tuchel cannot afford to leave him out of his squad for next year’s World Cup.
The German tactician must find a way to resolve his differences with him to prevent the ongoing scrutiny from affecting England’s preparations.
