The goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has seen his importance in the FC Barcelona team decline considerably this season, as Joan Garcia has arrived to take the starting spot between the sticks.
Still, the Pole is his deputy, and plays whenever the Spaniard is not available or does not play for rest. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Szczesny recently appeared in an interview with the Polish outlet TVP Sport, and made some interesting remarks.
The goalie was already retired when the Blaugrana side decided to sign him in October 2024. He made this reference when he was asked about his advice to his compatriot Robert Lewandowski, whose future is currently highly uncertain. The goalkeeper responded to this question in a joking manner:
“If I were advising him based on my own experience, I’d tell him to retire, because that’s when the best offers arrive.”
When asked if he could still contribute for Barcelona, he replied:
“I still have the desire and I still can.”
Meanwhile, he also revealed one of Hansi Flick’s ambitions with the Catalan club:
“Hansi has already won the Champions League, but not with Barcelona. It seems he strongly desires to be the coach who brings the Champions League title back to Barcelona.”
Although he is no longer a starter, Wojciech Szczesny still remains an important part of the Barcelona dressing room, both for his personality and experience. Hopefully, he will continue with the Catalan side for as long as he can, before ultimately hanging up his boots for good.
