Igor de Camargo has urged Benfica winger Dodi Lukebakio to work without the ball after a turbulent few days at the club. “When a team defends, everyone must defend. You cannot play only when you have the ball.”
The former Belgium international, now coaching Genk’s B team, was speaking to A Bola.
Lukebakio exchanged words with José Mourinho when he was substituted against Moreirense. De Camargo said, “I am sure Mourinho will know how to handle this situation, he is very experienced and very competent. I do not know Lukebakio’s desire for the future, but I believe he knows he is at a big club.”
Highlighting the winger’s quality in attack, he added, “He has very strong attacking power, but you must also make a difference without the ball. I believe Mourinho will ask that of Lukebakio.”
Looking ahead to Belgium, he called Lukebakio “a strong candidate” for Rudi García’s next squad. “He plays for a great team, has good numbers with the national team, the coach likes him. It is a matter of producing good games until the call-up.” He struck three goals across two March friendlies.
This season for Benfica, Lukebakio has 21 appearances, 15 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, four in the Champions League, one in the Taça de Portugal and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 1,131 minutes he has one goal and three assists. He is valued at 20 million euros.
