Ihattaren converts VAR penalty as Fortuna seize crucial points

Fortuna Sittard beat Excelsior 2-1 on Friday at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion, a result that drops the visitors from 12th to 13th in the Eredivisie.

On the stroke of half time, VAR confirmed a penalty for a handball by Casper Widell, and Mohammed Ihattaren converted in the fifth minute of first half stoppage time.

Kaj Sierhuis then glanced in Lance Duijvestijn's cross following a corner (58.). Noah Naujoks halved the deficit from Mike Van Duinen's pass (78.), but the hosts saw the game out.

Fortuna registered 16 attempts, hitting the target six times. Excelsior produced 10 efforts and struck the post through Derensili Sanches Fernandes.
