Amid ongoing uncertainty around Liverpool’s season, attention has also turned to the future of Ibrahima Konate, whose contract situation is becoming increasingly significant.
Speaking on the Anfield Index podcast Media Matters, Lewis Steele offered insight into the situation during his conversation with Dave Davis. With Konate’s current deal set to expire in June, speculation has intensified around whether Liverpool can secure his long term future.
Steele acknowledged the growing noise, explaining why recent reports have surged: “the reason there’s loads of French reports is because the Parisians have all focused their previews on Konate because it’s a French player playing in France for a non French team.”
Despite the external speculation, there are indications that Liverpool remain optimistic about keeping the defender. Steele made his stance clear, stating, “I am more leaning towards him staying than going.”
That said, there is no agreement in place yet, which keeps the situation delicately balanced. As Steele confirmed, “as it stands, nothing has been agreed just yet.”
This combination of cautious optimism and lack of concrete progress highlights the uncertainty facing Liverpool. While the club may feel confident internally, the absence of a signed deal leaves the door open to further developments.
One of the recurring themes in the discussion was interest from Real Madrid, although Steele suggested that the situation may not be as straightforward as initially reported.
“I’m not 100% sure on the whole Real Madrid thing because they definitely did call their interest,” he explained, before adding that “a few weeks ago there was a couple of murmurs that they were back in the race again.”
This uncertainty around external interest adds another layer of complexity. Even if Liverpool are confident, shifting dynamics in the transfer market could quickly alter the landscape.

The Konate situation also echoes previous contract sagas at Liverpool, something Steele subtly referenced when discussing the club’s approach.
He noted that patience is often required in negotiations but warned of potential risks, saying Liverpool “need to learn a lesson from that one,” referencing past delays in securing key players to new deals.
This context is important, as Liverpool cannot afford to repeat previous mistakes, especially with a player of Konate’s importance. Allowing the situation to drift closer to expiry without resolution would increase pressure on all sides.
Ultimately, Liverpool face a critical period in determining Konate’s future. Steele’s conclusion reflects both confidence and caution: “if I had to put my eggs in one basket, I would say Konate does extend.”
However, until a deal is signed, uncertainty remains. With his contract ticking down towards June, Liverpool must act decisively to secure clarity.
For now, the situation remains unresolved, balancing internal belief with external speculation. Whether Konate commits his future to Liverpool or becomes the subject of a wider transfer battle will be one of the defining subplots of the club’s summer.
