Ipswich Town suffered their second defeat in four days at home to Charlton Athletic.

Kieran McKenna’s side were billed as one of the favourites for promotion heading into the 2025/26 campaign, due to the overwhelming amount of talent they possess in their ranks.

A slow start saw them fail to win in their first four encounters, but the Tractor Boys turned that around to score 10 points in their last four matches before the October international break.

However, losses at the hands of Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic since the resumption of second-tier action have halted any momentum that was building, leaving Ipswich 12 points behind league leaders Coventry City.

There was further insult to injury, as former Norwich City player Onel Hernandez got to enjoy the triumph as part of the Addicks’ camp.

The 32-year-old joined Charlton in October after starting the season as a free agent and has yet to make an appearance for his new club.

Hernandez released a 13-minute rant to his YouTube channel earlier this year when Marcelino Nunez switched the Canaries for Ipswich, going as far to say he would “f***ing break” the midfielder if they met again on the pitch.

When it became clear that Charlton were going to take all three points away from Portman Road, Hernandez decided it was time to start goading the Ipswich Town supporters, paying tribute to his Norwich City roots.

The 32-year-old cupped his ear to the crowd, revelling in the fact that he was getting the best of the Tractor Boys once more.

This action has sparked mass discussion on social media, with Norwich and Charlton fans both delighted with Hernandez’s decision to have some fun at Ipswich’s expense.

“Didn't even need to get on the pitch to have the Ipswich fans rattled,” stated an Addicks fan.

“We just brought him for the bants didn’t we,” joked another.

“Absolute legend,” commented a Norwich supporter.

“Good win from him and Charlton,” chimed in another.

A similar feeling couldn’t be found among Ipswich fans, who were naturally annoyed at the frustrating defeat.

“Has he actually played since he moved?” pointed out an upset member of the Tractor Boys’ faithful.

Onel Hernandez will hope to contribute more during Charlton Athletic’s next Ipswich Town clash

Although Hernandez would’ve been delighted to see his new club defeat Ipswich Town, he would’ve hoped to get on the pitch and help contribute to the success directly.

Instead, he had to settle for the bench, which did in turn allow the former Norwich City man to goad the Portman Road crowd.

Charlton and Ipswich are next scheduled to face off on April 22, which is currently the third-last match for both teams in their 2025/26 Championship campaigns.

If the Tractor Boys do turn things around and begin to mount a promotion charge, Hernandez could hand his former rivals a heavy blow at a crucial point in the season, a prospect which will be enormously enticing for him.
