Thiago Silva was already preparing himself to be a coach long before he’d left Chelsea.

We’d regularly see posts on his Instagram of him preparing for games or analysing them after he’d played.

That hasn’t stopped now he’s left Chelsea. He’s just put up a story showing him watching Dortmund against Sporting in the Champions League from last night, and it had an interesting caption.

Silva had paused the stream at the moment that on loan midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, his former teammate at Stamford Bridge, entered the pitch to make his debut for his new team, Borussia Dortmund.

The confused face emoji in the caption probably highlights the fact that Silva probably missed the news that Chukwuemeka had joined the German giants on loan before the deadline last week.

Given the crazy, ceaseless transfer business Chelsea do, it should be no surprise that even ex players lose track of who is going where.

Perhaps he’s also confused why Chelsea let such a talented young player go without giving him much of a chance. We certainly were.

You can see the defender’s story in the image embedded here:

Thiago Silva spots Carney Chukwuemeka playing for Dortmund.

We all knew that losing Silva was going to be a blow and a setback, but most of us accepted it was a painful moment that was going to have to happen sooner or later.

In fact, it’s been more damaging than we could have expected. In the relentless drive to make the squad younger, players like Silva were the first to go. But his experience was replaced by youth and potential – and the leadership vacuum left by the departure of the Brazilian and others has been devastating.

Off the pitch and on it, we’d love to have him back! It sounds like it might happen one day, too…
