With the October international break coming to an end, anticipation is building for Liverpool’s return to Premier League action at home to Chelsea this Sunday. The Reds enter the fixture knowing a win will guarantee them a spot at the top of the table for another week, with Arne Slot looking to extend his record-breaking start as head coach.

Slot will be without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson for the game, with the Brazilian sidelined for at least another month. The only other absentee of note this season has been Harvey Elliott, who has missed the last seven matches with a broken foot. The Englishman provided fans with a boost this week, posting photos and videos on his Instagram account showing his return to fitness training.

Paul said:

“When he got the injury, the early talk was that he was targeting a comeback for Chelsea. I was speaking to someone… they felt that might have been a little bit optimistic on Harvey’s part.

“Liverpool don’t see any need to rush him back. If they don’t think he’s 100 per cent, they won’t throw him into the mix because they’ve basically got six other players there who can play.

“He will get his opportunity in the coming weeks. He’ll be desperate to take it, I think, because of the way he ended last season, the way he was playing in pre-season. It looked like he was looking to take that next step in his Liverpool career.

“He said as much to us when we had a chat with him in Philadelphia. He’s looking to really take another step towards becoming a leader in the Liverpool squad. All that came to a bit of an abrupt end.

“I think fans can’t wait to see him back, particularly in the new system that accommodates a number 10. In the archetypal number 10 position, Elliott has got a lot of what you need for that role.

“It’s a case of not having to throw him back in. I think that hurt Liverpool so much last season, the fact that they got so many injuries at the same time. When players came back, they had to start games when they weren’t 100 per cent sure.

“It’s different now, so I think we’re going to find out a little bit more about how Liverpool handle injuries now under the Slot regime.”

REDMEN REACTS

Despite his relatively tender age, Harvey Elliott has made well over 100 appearances in a red shirt and is the club’s 8th longest-serving player. Elliott played a vital role during last season’s injury crisis, starting crucial fixtures such as the EFL Cup final and the 1-1 draw against Manchester City in March. Liverpool’s downturn in form towards the end of the campaign coincided with Harvey’s absence from the team, with Jürgen Klopp admitting his ‘regret’ at not giving the talented midfielder more game time. The 21-year-old was in fine form during preseason, providing a delightful assist for Fábio Carvalho against Arsenal. That sort of creativity was sorely missing during the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest – despite the club’s wealth of talent in midfield, the England U21 star has a unique skillset amongst the current crop. His reintroduction to the side will take some of the burden from Dominik Szoboszlai and could lead to better performances from the Hungarian.
