Iñaki Williams will not have a break after La Liga, with Ghana calling up the Athletic forward for next Tuesday’s friendly against Wales as preparation for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June. According to El Correo, the recall puts him back in the frame for the tournament.

There is no final squad yet, but this selection boosts the chances of the Athletic captain making the cut. He missed the previous two camps due to muscular injuries.

The attacker, who featured for Spain in a 2016 friendly, has played 26 times for Ghana and scored two goals.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz, replacing Otto Addo, has included Williams for Ghana’s final warm-up before their World Cup debut. The 73-year-old took charge in April and this will be his fifth World Cup, having led Portugal at South Africa 2010 and Iran at Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

Ghana open on 18 June against Panama, with group games also against England and Croatia.
