Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Real Madrid is now a formality, with the only remaining question being when the appointment will be made official.

Alvaro Arbeloa has already confirmed his departure, and Florentino Perez is once again turning to his Special One to restore order at the Bernabeu after two difficult seasons.

Mourinho’s salary and compensation fee

According to Diario SPORT, Mourinho is set to earn around €6 million net per season at Real Madrid, a figure almost identical to what the club offered Xabi Alonso just a season ago.

To bring the Portuguese coach to Madrid, Real Madrid will also need to pay Benfica his exit clause, which stands at €7 million.

That is exactly half of what it cost to sign Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, making it a comparatively straightforward financial operation.

Timing complicated by elections

The announcement had initially been planned for Sunday or Monday at the latest, with a formal presentation to follow a few days later.

However, the potential presidential elections triggered by Enrique Riquelme’s candidacy are threatening to delay all sporting planning by up to two weeks.

Real Madrid are also studying who will cover Mourinho’s release clause payment, with fiscal considerations and the uncertainty around the electoral process both factoring into that decision.

Should Florentino Perez win the election, as widely expected, the path will be clear for Mourinho’s appointment to be confirmed swiftly.

The Whites are ready to pay, the salary is agreed in principle, and the coach is willing. All that remains is the formality of the process playing out.
