Manchester City have suffered several injuries to their attacking players in recent weeks. Rayan Cherki is out for two months with a thigh injury. Omar Marmoush also faces a stint on the sidelines due to a knee injury. Savinho is yet to play this season, and Phil Foden has only played 15 minutes off the bench against Tottenham. However, Phil Foden and Savinho look set to return this weekend against Manchester United.
But there could be an opportunity for Divine Mukasa to make an impact. Mukasa is arguably the brightest prospect in Manchester City’s academy and looks ready to step up if required. The fact that he is a versatile attacking midfielder with a wide range of passing and immense technical ability means he could be the next cab off the rank at City.
Watching Divine Mukasa play at youth level, he looks to be a cut above his opponents. He dominated at under-18 level last season. At times, Mukasa looked like a man playing against boys. This season, he has stepped up to Manchester City’s EDS side. He hasn’t set the world alight yet for City’s EDS side. But he has spent time training with the City first-team. So that indicates that Mukasa is on the verge of breaking through at Manchester City.
Injuries may present Divine Mukasa with an opportunity to at least make the bench for Pep Guardiola’s side. Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush won’t be available for some time. Phil Foden and Savinho are working their way back to full fitness. If Mukasa can impress at training, he could play himself into first-team contention at City.
So far, Divine Mukasa has only made one first-team appearance for Manchester City. However, it wasn’t an official appearance. He played 30 minutes in Manchester City’s 3-nil friendly win over Palermo on the eve of this season. What stood out in Mukasa’s cameo appearance was his class and talent. He grabbed an assist as he set up Tijjani Reijnders to score in the second half of that match. But he also wasn’t overawed by playing against seasoned professionals. That cameo appearance showed that Mukasa can cut it against top level players.
Divine Mukasa is seemingly the next young player on the verge of breaking into the Manchester City first-team. Injuries may present him with an opportunity sooner rather than later. It would seem that Mukasa is ready to take that opportunity if it arises. Perhaps it may come tomorrow against Manchester United as City’s attacking options are stretched.
