With the New England Revolution mathematically out of the running for a playoff spot—something that had seemed like the team's fate for weeks—the Revs prepare to visit Inter Miami in Fort Lauderdale, with the Herons looking to improve their standings by using their remaining games to climb the standings.
Messi, despite his fatigue, should play—Argentina has already secured its spot in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers, and the player was not called up to represent the national team on this FIFA date.
But Mascherano's team still has defensive doubts. Conceding five goals to Chicago sounded the alarm. The absence of the ideal center-back—a combination of Noah Allen and Maxi Falcon—could complicate matters in the playoffs. Sergio Busquets, meanwhile, is approaching the end of his career with legendary status, and there's no clear replacement in the squad after Federico Redondo's departure, despite the arrival of Rodrigo de Paul.
With three games remaining, Mascherano's goal is clear: to finish in the top three and reach the knockout stages with momentum.
Inter Miami CF sits in 4th place in the Eastern Conference with 56 points. The New England Revolution sits in 6th place in the East with 53 points.
Philadelphia Union, FC Cincinnati, NYCFC, and Inter Miami make up the top half of the conference. The Union could even secure the overall lead with a win over NYC this weekend, although alternative scenarios are still open. Cincy, on the other hand, needs to win games against eliminated opponents (RBNY and Montreal) and hope for a Philly stumble.
