He highlighted how the expanded format has added further prestige.

Indeed, with four teams now competing instead of the traditional two.

“It’s an extraordinary achievement, a trophy of great value,” Chivu said.

“We’re here, four teams. In the past only two teams took part, the league winners and the cup holders. But now Milan and ourselves have been given this opportunity and we want to honour this competition.”

He then turned his attention to the semi-final itself.

Indeed, Chivu made it clear that Inter are braced for a demanding test against a Bologna side he believes are on a clear upward trajectory.

“We have a very important match. The semi-final against a really strong team that is clearly improving,” he explained.

Chivu also took time to comment on the wider context of football in Saudi Arabia.

The Romanian coach praised the scale of investment and the long-term vision driving the project.

“Saudi Arabia has become a special place in recent times,” he said.

“They are investing heavily, they have a serious desire to grow and a clear vision of football in general. They have big ambitions for the future. And are building something that will undoubtedly play a hugely important role.”

He also pointed to the quality on the sidelines as well as on the pitch.

“There are many top-level coaches here. The names present are no less important than those of the players,” Chivu added.

“This legacy will take time. However, the project started years ago and they have already achieved significant results. In a few years, it will become extremely relevant.”
