Cristian Chivu distilled Inter Milan’s formula for Scudetto success into three words after Sunday’s 5-2 demolition of Roma, “courage, character and the desire to dominate,” in a warm and revealing interview with Sky Sport that gave a genuine glimpse into the soul of this Inter squad.
The Inter head coach was asked across a range of topics, from personal growth to the returning players, and his answers carried the quiet confidence of a man who knows exactly who he is and what he has built.
Asked whether he had made any personal vows for the event of winning a first Scudetto as a manager in his debut season, Chivu was refreshingly direct, with quotes via FCInterNews.
“I am not superstitious. I believe in my work, in what I can give and transmit, that is my true strength as a human being. So no vows.”
On the main challenge of his first season, his answer was unexpectedly personal.
“Trying to be myself. I managed to do it, despite the possibility of putting on some of the masks this world offers you. I chose to have the strength and courage to remain who I am and not lose what I am from a human point of view. Professionally, I have also improved enormously.”
One of the most striking moments of the evening had been Chivu’s emotional embrace with Nicolo Barella after the final whistle.
Indeed, an image that captured something deeper than a simple post-match celebration.
Asked what it meant, Chivu was thoughtful.
“It shows the care within the group and the affection we transmit to one another. These are things that are sometimes undervalued, because you only see the professional side, what we are obliged to do.
“From a human point of view, people often forget the things that matter more than professional ones. Over time, this group has built something special that allows us to be more united, to offer more affection than some might think.”
On the return of Lautaro and Calhanoglu, Chivu was inclusive and generous.
“They are as important as the others who are part of this group, this club. We all know the importance of our players, we all know how much they can give us. That is the true strength of this group. And right now we are also enjoying the important returns of players who have had physical problems in recent months.”
The message from the dressing room after the Roma victory?
“That we have this incredible desire to be competitive until the very end.”
And the single detail that can make the difference in the final seven games of the title race? “Courage, character and the desire to dominate.”
