The midfielder combined personality, aggression and quality in possession, leaving a clear mark on a tense, tactical battle.

“He draws a vertical line through the match in indelible ink: the assist for Bonny is a delight. Then he fades. He does not appreciate the substitution,” wrote La Gazzetta dello Sport, via L’Interista.

In reference to the moment after only six minutes when Barella split open Roma’s back line to set up the decisive goal.

Tuttomercatoweb also praised his all-round influence, noting how “you see him fighting in his own box, and seconds later verticalising for the forwards.”

“He finds an open highway for Bonny against the best defence in the league, and before the break almost sends Dumfries through in the same way.”

Even as Roma pushed hard in the second half, Barella showcased both his leadership and his energy, working on both sides of the ball until being replaced in the final stages.

His display was another reminder of how central he remains to Inter’s identity: intensity, personality, verticality.
