Beppe Marotta says that Simone Inzaghi decided to leave Inter Milan “the day after” the Champions League final against PSG.
The Nerazzurri President spoke at the Festival della Serie A, via FCInterNews. He also stated that Cristian Chivu is “the right profile” to take over as Nerazzurri coach.
Simone Inzaghi decided to leave Inter Milan this week.
The 49-year-old left the Nerazzurri after four years at the helm. He decided to join Al-Hilal rather than remaining at the San Siro.
Inzaghi’s exit came just a couple of days after the Champions League final. That match saw Inter suffered an historic 5-0 loss at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

Inter President Beppe Marotta commented that “in football, if you win you’re good.”
“And if you lose, much less so.”
“There’s a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth over the debacle seven days ago,” Marotta admitted. “But that’s a part of football.”
“Coming second is not a failure, but a source of pride,” said the Inter President. “Because reaching the final of the Champions League, the biggest club competition, is extraordinary.”
“And it’s even more extraordinary to have done it twice in three years. We have to look at that as well.”
“Tue, there’s bitterness and deep disappointment,” Marotta said.
“But I’d firmly say that our season – which isn’t over yet because there’s the Club World Cup, which we’re representing Italy in along with Juve, is a source of pride.”
“Football is a world where everything burns out very quickly,” Marotta noted.
“But on Tuesday, Inzaghi told us: ‘My Inter cycle is over, I prefer to have a new experience.'”
“Many will say that we could have seen this coming,” Marotta said. “But that’s not the case.”
“Because the approach to the final caused us not to touch upon that topic in the previous week.”
“And I’ll say this with equal frankness,” the Inter President went on. “Inzaghi made the decision only on the Monday after the loss to PSG.”
“Reading the newspaper there’s talk of skepticism and confusion. But we simply took the decision, which found us only partly prepared, because there was no certainty he’d leave.”

As far as Inter’s search for a new coach goes, Marotta said that “the newspapers suggested many different names.”
“But all with completely different profiles,” he noted.
The Inter President stated that “the first thing that has to be identified when changing coaches is the profile.”
He called this “the consequence of strategy and guidelines.”
“After the ownership outlined has the strategy, then you look to find the right profile,” Marotta said.
“We needed a young coach, who fully embraces the guidelines of the club. And who implements a project that gets the best out of the youth team players.”
“Inter are a big club and have the obligation to participate in competitions, and try to win,” said the Inter President. “For that, a lot of qualities are necessary.”
“Qualities that we felt were there in the case of Chivu. I can’t make that official yet, because there’s a bureaucratic aspect regarding him still being registered to Parma thtat we still have to deal with.”
“But we’ll finalize it with him.”
Marotta insisted that Cristian Chivu “is the right profile for the objectives I’ve listed.”
“It’s not confusion,” the Inter President said of the club’s strategy. “But a form of courage, inherent in leaders.”
“The important thing is that there’s a strong club, a strong leadership, and a well-defined project,” Marotta concluded.
