Inter Milan star goalkeeper Yann Sommer is seemingly enjoying life at the San Siro despite approaching his career’s finale.

Speaking to Blick via FCInterNews, Sommer admitted he is currently the ‘best version of himself’ despite being 36 years old.

Yann Sommer joined Inter from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 as a short-term replacement for Andre Onana.

Indeed, the Nerazzurri needed an experienced stopper to replace the Cameroon international, who moved to Manchester United.

Despite Sommer’s age, Simone Inzaghi’s charges have made the right choice to name him Onana’s heir.

In addition to winning the Scudetto in his first season at the club, Sommer has been a world-class between the sticks.

Last season, he only conceded 22 league goals.

Though the numbers have slightly increased this term, the Swiss ace has proved a reliable option for Inter.

His deputy, Josep Martinez, has recently done well, but when fit, Sommer is Inzaghi’s number-one choice in goal.

“I never get bored because I’m very involved in the game,” Sommer admitted. “I’m always on alert because I often play the ball with my feet.

“To do this, you have to stay mentally focused – it’s demanding.

Meanwhile, Sommer has only capitulated twice in the Champions League this season.

“Honestly, I don’t pay too much attention to statistics, but they are certainly important and rewarding numbers,” he added.

“This means that the team is doing an excellent defensive job, even though this year we haven’t been as perfect as last season.”

Finally, he opened up on his current form.

“I think this is the best version of Sommer ever, at 36,” Sommer said.

“I’ve gained experience and benefited from years of work, both physically and mentally.

“I’ve had great periods of form in the past as well, but I wasn’t playing for teams that were competing for titles.

“Inzaghi? During matches, he’s incredible because he experiences everything with such intensity; he almost wants to get on the pitch himself.

“I doubt he’s ever stayed in his technical area. In training, however, he is very calm and precise.”
