Yann Sommer delivered a measured and honest assessment of Inter Milan’s UCL elimination after the Nerazzurri bounced back with a commanding 2-0 victory over Genoa, insisting there are no excuses for the exit while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football at the highest level.

The Switzerland goalkeeper spoke to RAI Radio Uno after the final whistle, with the win over Genoa clearly providing some relief following the pain of the Bodo/Glimt defeat.

Sommer drew a parallel with how Inter responded after the difficult first leg in Norway, pointing to the Lecce victory as proof that this squad knows how to pick themselves up when it matters most.

“It was a very important match for us after the defeat against Bodo, just like the Lecce game was after the first leg defeat,” he said, with quotes via FCInterNews.

“The team did well, we defended strongly and had control of the match for ninety minutes. I am very happy.”

On the Champions League exit itself, Sommer was candid.

He acknowledged that Bodo/Glimt may have been underestimated on paper, but was firm that the Norwegian side deserved their victory.

“It is true, but only on paper. We played against a strong team and over two legs we had many problems. Football is like that sometimes, we have to accept it too.”

He pointed to missed chances in the first leg as a key factor.

“We had great opportunities and should have scored one more goal to go through. Away from home everything is a bit different, that is not an excuse, but it is the reality.”

Crucially, he praised the squad’s response in the days that followed.

“During the week, the important thing was to stay calm and focus on the Genoa game, and we did well in every department.”

With the derby now on the horizon, Sommer’s closing message was brief but pointed.

“We look forward, now there is the derby.”
