Lazio held Inter Milan to a pulsating 2-2 draw at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the penultimate round of the 2024/25 Serie A season. In doing so, Marco Baroni’s side significantly compromised Inter’s hopes of defending the Scudetto.

Inter took advantage of Napoli’s slip-up against Genoa last weekend to bridge the gap to a point with a comfortable 2-0 win at Torino. Simone Inzaghi’s side had already beaten Lazio twice this season via an aggregate score of 8-0, including a remarkable 6-0 triumph in December’s reverse fixture.

However, Lazio’s form has since improved drastically. Therefore, Inter’s first Serie A double over Marco Baroni’s team was anything but a foregone conclusion. Accordingly, goalscoring chances were at a premium in the opening 25 minutes.

When it looked like the teams would enter halftime on level terms, Yann Bisseck drew first blood to hand Inter a slender lead. The Nerazzurri immediately punished Gustav Isaksen’s massive miss only moments earlier.

Lazio leveled the score through Pedro. But Inter regained the lead minutes later as Denzel Dumfries buried home a thumping header. It wasn’t the end of drama at San Siro. Bisseck went from top to flop, as he committed a silly penalty, subsequently converted by Pedro.

Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.

Inter (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer – 7/10

Untested until late in the first half when he pulled off a crucial save to thwart Isaksen in a one-on-one. Had no chance to stop Pedro’s close-range shot and nearly parried away the Spaniard’s spot-kick.

Alessandro Bastoni – 7/10

Caught out of position in what could’ve been a fateful 42nd minute, but Sommer bailed him out. However, everything was perfect for the rest of the night.

Francesco Acerbi – 7/10

Never had to sweat over Taty Castellanos’ presence in the box, the veteran defender enjoyed plain sailing against his former club.

Yann Bisseck – 5/10

In the right place at the right time to put Inter in front with a clinical finish. Yet, stuttered in the second half and nearly let Boulaye Dia draw Lazio level before giving away a cheap penalty.

Federico Dimarco – 7/10

Arguably one of his best performances in recent games. The Italian wingback was omnipresent in the final third and nearly beat Christos Mandas with a thunderous half-volley midway through the first half.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 5/10

Made some uncharacteristic mistakes in possession and never truly found his rhythm, often looking a step off the pace. Had no say in attack.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 7/10

Whether fatigue caught up with the Turkish star or it wasn’t his night, Calhanoglu struggled to dictate the tempo as he usually does, misplacing simple passes and failing to provide his usual spark in midfield. Made up for lost possession with the assist.

Nicolo Barella – 7/10

The diminutive midfielder’s tireless work rate kept Inter’s engine room tick over in difficult moments. Never stopped running and never lost the ball. Impeccable!

Denzel Dumfries – 8/10

Though he had a relatively quiet game by his high standard, the ‘Flying Dutchman’ lived up to the tag with another fantastic header to restore Inter’s lead when it mattered the most.

Mehdi Taremi – 2/10

Swooped in for the injured Lautaro Martinez, the Iranian striker drew a few fouls but never threatened Mandas’ goal in another sub-standard appearance.

Marcus Thuram – 4/10

Slightly more involved in the link-up play than Taremi, the Frenchman still had a marginal role in tonight’s affair.

Substitutes

Joaquin Correa – 5/10
