Reigning Serie A title holders Inter claimed a precious 1-0 win against Roma in Sunday’s heavyweight fixture at the Stadio Olimpico. Lautaro Martinez soaked up the limelight as the Nerazzurri hero, returning to the scoresheet with a spectacular strike.

Simone Inzaghi’s side headed into proceedings in a buoyant mood after winning three consecutive games in all competitions, including back-to-back 3-2 league victories against Torino and Udinese. However, Inter failed to outplay Roma tonight.

It’s debatable whether they deserved to take home three points, even though second-half substitute Denzel Dumfries squandered two massive chances to double his side’s lead. After weathering a first-half storm, Inter broke the deadlock through Martinez at the hour mark.

Until that point, Inter were on the back foot. But after falling behind, Roma threw multiple bodies forward in pursuit of an equalizer, leaving acres of space for Inzaghi’s team to exploit. Had Dumfries shown more composure, Inter could’ve walked away with a more comprehensive win.

Victory is all that matters as the Nerazzurri restored a two-point deficit on table-topping Napoli. Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.

Inter (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer – 6.5

Apart from Lorenzo Pellegrini’s decent attempt from the edge of the box, the Swiss goalkeeper didn’t have to intervene tonight before denying Matias Soule’s long-range effort at the death.

Benjamin Pavard – 7.5

After several unconvincing performances, the French defender lived up to his reputation at the Olimpico, closing every gap in front of Sommer’s goal.

Francesco Acerbi – 7

Defending against in-form Artem Dovbyk requires strength, positioning, and determination, all the virtues displayed by the Inter veteran this evening.

Alessandro Bastoni – 6.5

The Italian star failed to meet the high standards of his defensive colleagues as Paulo Dybala gave him a run for his money. But he stood firm when it mattered most.

Federico Dimarco – 6

It was an atypically quiet night for the offensive-minded left-back. His signature runs down the flank were missing, yet he sacrificed for the team, helping Bastoni deal with Dybala.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6

His tireless runs in the middle of the pitch often gave his defenders more breathing space, yet his attacking contribution was virtually non-existent.

Hakan Calhanoglu – N/A

Picked up an injury after only 12 minutes.

Nicolo Barella – 6.5

Back to football fields after a month on the sidelines, the dynamic midfielder looked rusty in possession but made up for that with endless work rate.

Matteo Darmian – 6

Uneventful on the opposition’s half but disciplined at the back, the aging wingback delivered a mediocre showing.

Marcus Thuram – 7

Despite failing to find the net, the French forward was the point of difference in attack, often retaining possession and bringing other teammates into play.

Lautaro Martinez – 7.5

There’s a reason Inzaghi refuses to bench his captain even when he’s not at his best. The Inter superstar showed how talismanic he could be with a thundering half-volley to win the game for his team.

Substitutes

Davide Frattesi – 7
