Runaway Serie A leaders Inter thumped top-four hopefuls Roma in a one-sided affair at San Siro on Sunday night. Cristian Chivu’s side ran riot in their first league outing after the international break, securing a superb 5-2 victory over familiar foes.
Inter headed into the break on a three-game winless league streak for the first time since 2023. However, Lautaro Martinez’s return from injury helped the Nerazzurri get back on track and avoid the ignominy of going four consecutive Serie A games without winning for the first time in three years.
Indeed, El Toro notched a brace in his first top-flight start since mid-February, extending his tally to 16 Serie A goals this season. Perhaps more importantly, underperforming striker Marcus Thuram ended his five-game drought in Italy’s top competition with a towering header.
Dynamic midfield duo Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella were also on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Gianluca Mancini and Lorenzo Pellegrini found the net for the visitors, yet it was merely enough to soften the blow of a second successive defeat in this fixture. As a result, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are at risk of losing further ground on fourth-placed Como, who will face Udinese tomorrow.
As for Inter, they have stretched their lead over runners-up Milan to nine points ahead of the Rossoneri’s mouth-watering away clash against defending champions Napoli tomorrow night. Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.
Yann Sommer – 7/10
Despite conceding twice, the Swiss veteran produced several remarkable saves on either side of halftime. However, it’s fair to admit that he looked shaky when asked to play with his feet.
Manuel Akanji – 6/10
Had all sorts of problems against Donyell Malen but managed to neutralize the diminutive forward for large spells. Struggled at times with pace and movement behind him, but showed resilience in key moments.
Francesco Acerbi – 7/10
Slotted in for the injured Yann Bisseck, the 38-year-old delivered a decent performance at the heart of Chivu’s backline, making a couple of crucial last-gasp clearances to stop Roma in transition.
Alessandro Bastoni – 6/10
These are difficult times for the Nerazzurri stalwart, and it seemed like the off-field turmoil caught up with the Italian star, who struggled at times, giving away cheap fouls and appearing shaky in possession.
Federico Dimarco – 7/10
Although Serie A’s most creative player failed to register a goal contribution tonight, he was a constant threat down the left flank, making numerous progressive runs and
Piotr Zielinski – 7/10
The Polish midfielder picked up an assist late in the first half and showcased his class on multiple occasions, demonstrating superb technique and ability to retain possession in tight spaces.
Hakan Calhanoglu – 9/10
There was not much more Chivu could have expected from his talismanic playmaker. In addition to providing two assists, the former Milan star scored an absolute stunner to restore Inter’s lead on the stroke of halftime.
Nicolo Barella – 8/10
It wasn’t exactly the vintage Barella performance, but the Italian international looked far more secure on the ball than in some recent games and returned to the scoresheet for the first time since October.
Denzel Dumfries – 6/10
A lengthy spell on the sidelines took a toll on the Dutch wingback, who seemed rusty and often failed to make an impact going forward.
Marcus Thuram – 8/10
The Frenchman finally ended his scoring drought, and he couldn’t have picked a better moment to rediscover his touch, with the Scudetto on the line.
Lautaro Martinez – 10/10
It felt like he was never injured, as it took him less than 60 seconds on his return to action to find the back of the net. Sealed Roma’s fate with another poacher’s finish at the start of the second half.
