Newly crowned Serie A champions shared the spoils with a relegated Hellas Verona side in a dramatic 1-1 draw at San Siro. Despite Inter’s strong pre-match favoritism, the visitors managed to steal a point right at the death.
With the Scudetto in the bag, and Inter beating Lazio on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia final to secure their first domestic double since 2010, there was little to play for today. However, the Nerazzurri knew a win against already-relegated Verona would bring them within a single victory from their 29-win tally achieved in the 2023/24 season.
Despite dominating the game in the opening 45 minutes, Cristian Chivu’s side couldn’t find the back of the net, wasting several huge chances. Nevertheless, they opened the scoring at the start of the second half, with Andrias Edmundsson chesting the ball into his own net.
Verona stood no chance after falling behind and were lucky to avoid a heavier defeat. However, Chivu’s decision to rotate his squad eventually backfired as Paolo Sammarco’s side found a late equalizer through Kieron Bowie.
Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.
Yann Sommer (8/10) – A 16th clean sheet was a fitting parting gift for the Swiss veteran in his farewell appearance at San Siro. He left the pitch shortly before Inter conceded the equalizer.
Matteo Darmian (7/10) – Another outgoing Inter star held up his end of the bargain, helping fend Verona off with minimal effort.
Stefan de Vrij (8/10) – Placed at the heart of Inter’s backline, the Dutchman had a spotless game, dealing with the likes of Suslov and Bowie with ease.
Francesco Acerbi (7/10) – Made Alessandro Bastoni’s absence go unnoticed with another dominant defensive performance in his final home match in the Nerazzurri colors.
Carlos Augusto (6/10) – Although he wasn’t as effective as Federico Dimarco on the left wing, he created a lot of danger and even came close to scoring with a towering header early in the second half.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan (6/10) – Like last weekend at the Olimpico, the Armenian midfielder struggled to make a meaningful impact for most of the game.
Petar Sucic (7/10) – Filling Hakan Calhanoglu’s shoes is one of the most daunting tasks at San Siro, but the Croatian starlet lived up to the task today, dictating tempo with perfect vision and passing.
Andy Diouf (5/10) – Today’s showing probably best illustrates the Frenchman’s first season in Serie A. Too many misplaced passes and poor decisions repeatedly disrupted his rhythm.
Luis Henrique (5/10) – Handed a rare chance to start since Denzel Dumfries’ return from injury, the Brazilian endured another frustrating outing, doing nothing noteworthy down his flank.
Lautaro Martinez (4/10) – It was an odd game for the Inter captain, who uncharacteristically squandered numerous presentable scoring chances on either side of halftime.
Ange-Yoan Bonny (7/10) – Though it was eventually recorded as an own goal by Edmundsson, Bonny’s towering header forced the decisive touch, with the ball deflecting off the defender’s chest and into the net.
Federico Dimarco 6/10
Piotr Zielinski 5/10
Francesco Pio Esposito 4/10
Mattia Mosconi 6/10
