One of the most highly anticipated fixtures in the Serie A calendar pits Inter and Milan against each other in Sunday’s mouth-watering clash at San Siro. With only two points separating the sides before the kick-off, this encounter has all the makings of an early-season Scudetto six-pointer.
Inter headed into the November international break as joint Serie A leaders, alongside Roma, following a 2-0 home win over Lazio. Cristian Chivu’s men have won their last three league matches and will, therefore, take the field in a buoyant mood, seeking amends for their recent woes in this fixture.
Unbeaten in their last five meetings with Inter across all competitions, Milan seemingly have what it takes to knock the Nerazzurri off their perch. However, the Rossoneri have shared the spoils in three of their last four Serie A games, including a gut-wrenching 2-2 draw against Parma on the eve of the international break.
It’s worth noting that Milan squandered a two-goal lead in that disappointing stalemate, compromising a feel-good factor at San Siro. There’s no doubt that beating arch-rivals would restore confidence inside Massimiliano Allegri’s dressing room. Given Inter’s formidable form, that could be easier said than done.
Furthermore, the nominal hosts come into this as betting favorites. It’s no surprise that live betting today reflects that confidence, with most bookmakers leaning toward another Inter triumph. That, by no means, suggests the Nerazzurri or anyone else, for that matter, can afford to underestimate Milan.
Milan avoided defeat in both league clashes against Inter last season (W1, D1), including a 2-1 win as the nominal visitors. Moreover, the Rossoneri pulled off an epic second-half comeback on their way to beating Simone Inzaghi’s side 3-2 in the Supercoppa Italiana final.
It’s also impossible to overlook Milan’s emphatic 3-0 triumph in the return leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie against the Nerazzurri in April. With that in mind, Allegri’s team should have a psychological edge going into Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina, having already shown they can turn the tide against Inter when it matters most.
Equally important could be the fact that this will be Chivu’s touchline debut in this high-stakes contest. Despite facing Milan as an Inter defender during his playing career, this is an entirely different challenge. Still, the 45-year-old deserves the benefit of the doubt following a remarkable managerial start at San Siro.
As for Allegri, he knows in-depth the strengths and weaknesses of his side and will aim to exploit any vulnerabilities in Inter’s setup. The Italian tactician’s experience in high-pressure derbies gives Milan a tactical edge. On that basis, it would take a brave man to write the Rossoneri off before the kick-off, even though they face long odds.
Prediction: Milan to Win
Chivu has fully unlocked Inter’s scoring potential this season. For context, last season’s Serie A runners-up have netted a comfortable league-high 26 goals – at least eight more than any other side in the division. It’s then unsurprising that they’ve bagged 2+ goals in eight of their 11 league outings, topping the league in this metric as well.
Any side coached by Massimiliano Allegri would naturally stand a decent chance of fending off this free-flowing Inter frontline. However, Milan have shown defensive cracks in several Serie A games this season. Topically, they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five league matches.
Yet, they scored at least twice three times during that sequence. As such, we expect both teams to score in a game that promises to produce at least three goals.
