Simone Inzaghi reveals further injury concerns within the Inter squad following a 1-0 win over Genoa, but was ‘not surprised’ at how difficult it proved to break down Patrick Vieira’s side.

The pressure was really on the Nerazzurri following the loss to Juventus and growing injury problems, which intensified when Joaquin Correa went off at half-time with a sprained left knee.

It was a struggle for Inzaghi’s men to break down Patrick Vieira’s well-organised Genoa, but they got a stroke of luck when Lautaro Martinez’s header on a Hakan Calhanoglu corner was deflected in off Patrizio Masini’s chest.

This was a game of few chances, though Genoa had them too with a big Josep Martinez save on Caleb Ekuban from point-blank range, while Nicolò Barella’s scorcher hit the underside of the crossbar.

“We must congratulate Genoa and Vieira, because they had a very good game, not that I was surprised having seen them this season,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“I also want to congratulate my own lads, it was the 37th match of the season, more for those who had international duty. They showed great determination, we see every week in Serie A that no game is easy and we only allowed Genoa one big chance that Martinez made a great save on.

“We also hit the woodwork yet again, created a lot and tested their goalkeeper. I am very happy, but would’ve said the same for this performance even if we hadn’t won, because they really put the effort in.”

Inter are now top of the table, awaiting Napoli’s tricky encounter with Como on Sunday morning, then there is the head-to-head on Saturday.

“Our fans saw we had some difficulties today, but they stuck with us. We have a lot of games in the next three weeks, we were coming off a defeat that really hurt, but we are all working in the same direction and hope to make our fans happy,” added Inzaghi.

Inter will play Lazio in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on Tuesday, then the Scudetto showdown with Napoli, followed by the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Feyenoord.

Francesco Acerbi made a decisive block with the score still at 0-0 and has helped solidify the defence with his return, but Marcus Thuram, Carlos Augusto and now also Correa are on the treatment table.

“Frattesi would’ve been on, but he had a few fitness problems yesterday and warmed up tonight, but was not ready to play. Acerbi has returned well, we waited for him to make a full recovery and fortunately now have plenty of alternatives in defence. Unfortunately, the problems have moved to the attack now and we hope Frattesi can be recovered for next week,” explained Inzaghi.

“It used to be that you’d play 38 games in a season, we already have some internationals who played 43. The fixture list is packed this season and we need to share out the strain as best we can.”
