Ipswich Town have welcomed some brilliant attacking talent to Portman Road over the past 15 years, despite the club going through somewhat of a rough patch at times.

David McGoldrick, Martyn Waghorn and DJ Campbell all impressed during a time where the Tractor Boys went from play-off challengers to a side more concerned with staying in the Championship, before ultimately suffering the drop to League One in 2019.

Perhaps Ipswich’s most destructive forward during this time was Daryl Murphy, who initially joined the Suffolk outfit on a short-term loan in 2010, before two more season-long temporary deals in 2012 and 2013.

It was in 2013 when the striker finally signed permanently and begun to firmly establish himself as one of the Championship’s best attacking talents.

During the 2014/15 campaign, Murphy netted 27 times and provided six assists in 46 league matches, helping the Tractor Boys to a play-off finish.

He couldn’t match these numbers the following term but still showcased his potency with 10 goals and four assists in 34 second-tier matches.

Daryl Murphy’s failure to replicate Ipswich Town success elsewhere “wasn’t really a surprise”

Murphy’s consistency had begun to catch the attention of other teams in the Championship, and recently relegated Newcastle United decided he was a smart addition to make to their attacking ranks.

The forward bagged five times and supplied one assist in 15 second-tier outings during the 2016/17 campaign as the Magpies went on to win the title, but was sold on to Nottingham Forest that summer.

At the City Ground, Murphy still showed signs that he had what it takes to score regular goals in the Championship, but couldn’t get anywhere near the sort of form he once enjoyed with the Tractor Boys.

When queried on why this might have been, Football League World’s Ipswich Town fan pundit, Adam Wilkin, believes that Murphy’s brilliant form at Portman Road was ultimately a matter of circumstance, which explains why it wasn’t replicated elsewhere.

“Daryl Murphy proved to be a superb signing for Ipswich Town,” stated Adam. “But I think prior to him coming in there probably weren't any great waves about him.

“He'd been an okay signing, largely used out on the left wing at times, but it was a case of everything coming together.

“His goal-scoring record in the Championship was one of the best in recent times, but at the time it very much felt like it was a flash in the pan or a one-season wonder.

“I wasn't really surprised to see him not score that much at Newcastle and Forest after he left. I think it was just a case of all the ingredients came together at the right time for him in that one season”

Daryl Murphy will forever be adored by Ipswich Town supporters

Although Murphy didn’t hit the heights he once showed that he was capable of away from Ipswich, he will always be remembered fondly at Portman Road.

His goals fired the Tractor Boys to the play-offs in 2015 and provided supporters with a hope that Premier League football may not be too far away.

Ultimately, that didn’t happen during the forward’s team in East Anglia, but the memories he created will live long in the minds of those who witness his heroics.

In the end, Murphy did achieve promotion with Newcastle United, which means that his post-Ipswich career wasn’t too much of a disappointment.
