The Clarets winger has emerged as a target for Kieran McKenna's newly-promoted side

Burnley winger Wilson Odobert has emerged as a transfer target for newly-promoted Premier League outfit Ipswich Town ahead of their shock 2024/25 top-flight crusade, with the Clarets having immediately returned to the Championship in tandem.

This is according to a report from Football Insider's transfer guru Pete O'Rourke, who claims that Kieran McKenna is continuing his designs of sourcing top Championship talent in order to bolster Ipswich's own survival ambitions next year.

Ipswich had registered a significant interest in Hull City forward Jaden Philogene before he elected to return to Aston Villa after just one year at the MKM Stadium, although their poaching of Jacob Greaves eventually proved successful.

Meanwhile, Ipswich also shelled out an initial £15 million outlay to acquire Manchester City's Liam Delap, who impressed on loan with the Tigers last term, and remain locked in negotiations with Blackburn Rovers over a move for Sammie Szmodics.

As per reports, Ipswich have been readying a potential £18 million swoop for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke too, although the recency of their reported interest in Odobert will invite undoubted questions whether they're still in for the Mackems star.

On the other hand, Burnley have been active in the transfer market under the new stewardship of two-time promotion winner Scott Parker and will hope for a replication of his success with Fulham and Bournemouth after signing Vaclav Hladky, Shurandy Sambo, Lucas Pires and Andreas Hountoundji ahead of their season opener against Luton Town on August 12.

While O'Rourke's report reveals interest from Portman Road, there's not yet any indication of the fee that would be required in order to get Odobert back to the Premier League this summer.

However, Burnley only acquired the highly-rated French youth international twelve months prior and the player still has four years to run on his current Clarets deal.

It is added that Burnley want to keep Odobert at the club for their promotion bid next term, which comes as little surprise given the promise he displayed last year despite their dismal relegation from the Premier League.

Still only 19, the tricky left-sided winger scored three times, made two assists and proved a continued source of invention and dynamism on either flank with his speed and direct dribbling, which are two key traits required by McKenna from his wide players at Ipswich.

Naturally, it's believed that Burnley could find themselves forced into reluctantly sanctioning a sale if Odobert himself demands a top-flight return although his stance hasn't been revealed just yet, either.

Burnley must attempt to fend off Ipswich Town's transfer interest in Wilson Odobert

Burnley may well be the recipients of a significant sum that simply cannot be rejected in the Championship and would facilitate a whole batch of incomings, which is a reality that second-tier outfits are routinely faced with.

The action that the Clarets should take is, of course, largely dependent on the offering in question and few supporters would be too displeased if Burnley were to accept a figure north of £20m, for example.

An outlay in that region is game-changing money at this level, but as we don't yet know how much Ipswich are looking to offer, it's fair to say that Burnley should stand firm and strive to maintain Odobert for 2024/25 as things stand.

After watching him feature in the Premier League last season, you get the impression that he - just like teammate Luca Koleosho, for that matter - could have an impact not too dissimilar to that of Crysencio Summerville for Leeds United.

The Dutchman showed signs of real promise in a struggling top-flight outfit before lighting up the division and his 19-goal, nine-assist haul rightly saw him named as the Championship's Player of the Year as he took the Whites to within 90 minutes of an immediate Premier League return against Southampton in May's crunch play-off final showdown.

Indeed, Odobert shares many of the traits displayed by Summerville during his time in the Premier League; reasonable and relative end product, innate technical dribbling and an unwavering confidence to take on opponents.

We've all seen how much those qualities have since come to the fore against lesser opposition in the Championship, and Burnley could well reap the rewards of a similar influence if they can successfully fight off Ipswich's interest.
