Is Inter Miami breaking MLS? De Bruyne could be the final straw

The news of Kevin De Bruyne's departure from Manchester City did not come as a shock to those who closely follow the natural course of European soccer. At 33, after nearly a decade as an important cog for the most dominant team in the Premier League in recent years, the Belgian midfielder is planning what could be his final transfer as a professional football player. And if it's in the hands of Inter Miami, that next chapter is with sunshine, clear identity, and a serious sports plan.

The American club wants De Bruyne in mid-2025, exactly in time for the Club World Cup, with a team, on paper at least, destined to be the most starry in MLS history. The deal is said to be in its infancy as per the English media, with negotiations already underway. What appeared to be mere rumor at first has now started taking a more concrete shape.

When green grass beats green bills

What's been convincing large stars to make the leap across the pond isn't just the strategic endeavor. Residing in the United States offers a more peaceful lifestyle, especially for athletes who've built long careers in Europe. Messi, for instance, didn't just come for the soccer. The peace of mind of his family was a determining influence. With De Bruyne, however, it seems that the attraction is the same: peace, quiet, and a place where he can finally catch his breath.

Inter Miami understands that as a competitive strength. The club understands it cannot compete with the Middle East financially, where De Bruyne has other contenders, but offers a more balanced life between life off the pitch and on the pitch. That is significant, especially for those who have young kids and additional responsibilities outside the stadium.

The MLS rulebook currently in force

Inter Miami now has two players who are considered to be designated players: Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi. That is one available slot, which in theory leaves the club free to sign another player outside the league's regular salary cap.

De Bruyne could be signed under current MLS rules. But the real issue is how it would impact the league. MLS has long presented itself as a level league, built on a salary cap and strict policies to prevent any one team from dominating. When a team starts stockpiling stars who still contribute on the field, not just in ads.

Messi still delivers. Busquets, even at his age, controls the tempo like few can. De Bruyne, with his ability to command a game, would be ready to lead the league in assists with one foot tied. Having all three on the same roster is legally sound, but it raises a tough question: even within the rules, is this kind of imbalance healthy for the league’s long-term growth?

Inter Miami’s thinking

Jorge Más has said that the club is seeking major reinforcements with the Club World Cup in mind. That tournament would be a turning point for Inter Miami, both in exposure and competition on the field. The team needs to be ready to face continental champions, well-structured clubs with powerful, well-veteran teams.

To that end, Messi by himself is not enough. They need more components, more answers. And De Bruyne, even at 33 years old, does everything. Vision, vertical passing, deadly shooting, and the ability to completely control the midfield.

Saudi clubs are still keen negotiators. De Bruyne was approached by Al-Ittihad last year but turned down their bid. Now that his contract runs out, that interest likely hasn't faded away. The only thing different is where he is in his career. He needs to choose where he wants to finish his career, and how he wants to be remembered.
