The World Cup could not be in a better place now that the quarterfinal spots are almost completely set. Only the Argentina vs. Egypt and Colombia vs. Switzerland matchups remain to determine the final two teams.
Following the USMNT's recent and disastrous elimination at the hands of Belgium, all that is left is to cheer for Inter Miami captain and the Argentine national team.
So let’s see whether or not Lionel Messi will play today against Egypt in Argentina’s crucial and decisive encounter.
The GOAT of football has one mission: reach the World Cup final and win it, leaving his legacy at the very top of international football, if that is even still possible.
However, Father Time comes for everyone, and even though the 39-year-old is tied as the World Cup’s top scorer, his recovery is not the same as it was a few years ago.
But without wasting any more time and getting straight to the point, Lionel Messi will play against Egypt, and he will do so from the start.
For this match, Lionel Scaloni is expected to repeat the same team that defeated Brazil 4-1 at the Monumental Stadium in the South American qualifiers for this World Cup (Adding Messi, who didn’t play that game).
To win, Argentina needs Lionel Messi. As was already shown in the hard-fought victory over Cape Verde, the South American side remains Messi-dependent. A weakness if you look at it from another perspective.
Why, you may be wondering? If the Inter Miami player does not shoot, nobody else does. That is a weakness that can be targeted by an opponent who understands Scaloni’s system.
For that same reason, unless it came from a penalty or because Messi was not on the pitch, every goal has been scored by the former FC Barcelona player.
That’s why tomorrow Lionel Messi will play against the AFCON team and will start.
