Erik ten Hag has reacted to the news that Sir Alex Ferguson has been axed from his ambassadorial role.

The news came midweek and shocked many when, really, I don’t think it should have.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been paid since his retirement and will forever remain an iconic figure at the football club, welcome at any time by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co. It’s not like the decision wasn’t mutual.

INEOS are trying to balance the books at Old Trafford and a lot of people seem to forget that many ordinary people, who love the club like you and I, lost their jobs as part of the redundancies not long ago. This is all part of the club’s plan to cut costs ahead of the Old Trafford regeneration and I am sure now that Ferguson is on board with that.

Ten Hag was asked about the decision to drop Ferguson from his ambassadorial role when he said (via The Mirror): “Of course it has an impact on us. Sir Alex is Manchester United.

“He built United to where the club is now and it impacts us. But on the other side, we know and Sir Alex knows what he wants.

“He wants to see a winning Manchester United and I’m sure he’s always available for any advice and we will need him.

“Now and then we have good contact. I would say, once in half a year I meet formally with him, but also of course, informally, around games.”

Sir Alex Ferguson decision won’t impact United players

In all seriousness, I don’t know how the decision has an impact on the first team or Ten Hag. It’s not like Ferguson won’t be attending most matches at Old Trafford as a result of being dropped as an ambassador when he remains that without the title.

Ferguson is happily retired, enjoying his horseracing and attending United matches. He doesn’t make day-to-day decisions at the club anymore and it’s time for everyone to move on that little bit more without completely letting go.

The legendary Scot will remain a frequent attendee in the director’s box no doubt.
