'It will come': Florian Wirtz's ELITE statement to Premier League rivals

Florian Wirtz has dished out an elite statement to Liverpool's Premier League rivals. It's coming.

Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz this summer in a move absolutely no one saw coming. The German playmaker was 'supposed' to end up at Bayern Munich, who have courted him for a very, very long time.

Only, Liverpool have also chased after Wirtz for a very long time. He's been someone they've long dreamed of getting and once it was clear he was moving this summer, the Reds took their chance.

Of course, it relied on Wirtz actually picking Liverpool over Bayern and Manchester City. He was willing to do that, though, and now the club boasts one of the biggest talents in world football.

Not that we've quite seen that yet. Wirtz has been quieter than expected in his opening Liverpool fixtures, with no goals and just the one assist (for Hugo Ekitiké in the Community Shield).

That's a slow start, then, for a player who has had 22 goal contributions just in the league in each of his last two seasons. But there's more to come - don't take our word for it, listen to Wirtz himself.

Florian Wirtz speaks out

“Yes, of course I would have liked to have scored a goal or collected a few points,” Wirtz told Sky Germany.

“But no matter what anyone says, I’m staying cool. I know what I’m capable of and I also know that I’ll really bring it onto the pitch at some point, so I’m just staying cool. That’s a good reminder.

“I don’t want to hear it all the time, “give him time, give him time.” Instead, I just try to do better each time than before.

“And sometimes there are just phases where things might not go your way; I haven’t had that very often in my career. Once I’ve gotten through it – that’s perhaps harsh, because I’m not playing badly, I just haven’t got the scoring points yet – it will come at some point, and then everything will be fine.

“It’s no secret that I’d like to have more so far, but I’m patient, and as I just said, I know full well that I can play good football. Sooner or later, I’m sure that things will return to normal.”

There are a few things to take away from this. Above all, though, is Wirtz's attitude.

He's taking things realistically, knowing full well that he hasn't actually played badly. It's just a case of certain numbers not showing up yet.

The confidence to know they're on their way as well, however, is what's particularly telling. Liverpool signed a player who knows exactly who he is and what he can do.

A part of that comes from his history. Wirtz isn't a player who consistently delivers goals and assists all season long. He had double digits for both last season but that still came with an 11-game spell with just two assists at the back end of the campaign.

So these drier spells will not worry him. Instead, this is a statement to the Premier League and a scary one.

Liverpool top the table with five wins from five and yet their new signing is sitting there admitting there's a lot more to come from him. Wirtz is just getting started and when he does fully click into gear, it's over for everyone else.
