Chelsea fought off interest from Manchester United to land Delap for £30m last summer after Ipswich got relegated.

However, Delap has really struggled, and has managed just two goals in 25 appearances, with one of those coming in the Premier League.

Pat Nevin urges Chelsea to sign Igor Thiago

Joao Pedro on the other hand is excelling, and has scored 11 league goals this season, and is looking like one of the best signings of last summer.

Chelsea have Emmanuel Emegha arriving from Strasbourg in the summer, but have previously been linked with Thiago.

The Brazilian striker has netted 17 league goals this season, and Nevin has urged the Blues to make a move for the Brentford star.

“Given the route they’re trying just now, if there was one that was closest, it would probably be Igor Thiago,” he told TEAMtalk.

“Because you look at that and think, right, okay, you’re scoring in the Premier League, and you are only 24.

“A lot of the problem with a lot of the other players that you get, and this isn’t just Chelsea, by the way. This seriously isn’t just Chelsea.

“This is Manchester United as well. They look around and think, yes, they scored a lot of goals in Germany or Italy. That’s different. That’s totally different; it doesn’t always translate.

“So somebody who is currently doing it in the Premier League, maybe he’s the one.”

Liam Rosenior backs Chelsea striker

Despite Delap’s struggles this season, Liam Rosenior has backed the England under-21 international to improve next season.

It can often take players time to adapt, especially if they are making a big step up like Delap did last summer, but the pressure will be on.

There’s huge expectation at Chelsea, and whilst the first season might be viewed as an adaptation period to a certain extent, next season certainly won’t be, and he’ll need to deliver.
