Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Italian club Genoa has verbally agreed to a loan deal for Southampton flop Maxwel Cornet.

With each disappointing result, Southampton is drawn closer to relegation in the Premier League. And at this stage, it is clearly evident that their impulsive signings last summer have backfired.

Initially signed to have varied options, the problem of plenty has added to the club's woes.

One such case is of attacker Maxwel Cornet.

The 28-year-old was signed by the Saints on a year-long loan deal from West Ham. However, Cornet has been given just 4 appearances, with his last appearance dating back to October.

The final nail in the coffin was put by Ivan Juric, by not considering Cornet in his plans. At this stage, an exit would've been the best for both parties and luckily, it is taking place now.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Genoa has verbally agreed to a loan deal for Maxwel Cornet. This comes after Southampton has decided to terminate Cornet's loan contract mid-season.

While Genoa's interest in out-of-touch Cornet might seem surprising, this loan deal makes complete sense for all parties involved.

During his days as Crystal Palace boss, Genoa manager Patrick Vieira has seen Cornet's effectiveness and is aware of his potential. Aptly, he sees him as an exciting option to help Genoa rise up the Serie A standings.

Further, it presents Cornet an opportunity to revive his career under one of the football greats Patrick Vieira.

Additionally, Southampton will also benefit from Cornet's departure. Now that the winger's loan deal is terminated, the Saints can choose to do another loan signing as per Premier League rules.
