Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni feels it was a “great sign” to beat Como in Serie A with the injuries the team did.
The Italian international spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the 2-0 victory. He hailed the team’s efforts while missing several important players at the back.
Inter have had their defensive depth stretched to the limits in recent weeks.
The likes of Francesco Acerbi and Benjamin Pavard have both been absent with thigh injuries..
However, things effectively went from bad to worse.
The likes of Stefan de Vrij and Matteo Darmian had fitness problems that meant that they were unable to start against Como this evening.
Therefore, there were few options for Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi.
The coach decided to go with a back three of Carlos Augusto, Alessandro Bastoni, and Yann Bisseck.
It was quite rare to see Bastoni playing in the centre of the back three like this. However, it was basically necessary.
Inter did not let the injury problems slow them down, however.
The Nerazzurri secured a 2-0 victory to take three more vital points in the Serie A title race.
After the match, Bastoni said that “We’re very happy, because both we as players and the fans can have a nice Christmas.”
“It was important,” the 25-year-old said of the match. “Because in the last few days all our rivals have won.”
“There were a lot of players missing. We gave a great sign.”
“Como are an organized team,” Bastoni said.
“But I’m starting to have a few matches under my belt,” he said of playing in the centre of the back three.
“It’s also a position I play with the national team.”
“We have a great group here. And we have Carlos back, who plays a lot of different positions, and that’s been important.”
“Now we’re waiting to get the rest of the injured players back,” Bastoni said. “We need everyone.”
And of Simone Inzaghi’s halftime message to the team, Bastoni said “Things were too rushed at the start.”
“We didn’t expect that much aggression from them,” the Italian international said of facing Como.
“He told us to just go out on the pitch and play the way we know how to. And we did.”
