Murray Wallace is yet to feature for Millwall in the Championship this season

Millwall look to have found their ideal centre-back pairing with Jake Cooper and Japhet Tanganga impressing at the heart of their defence, and it's meant that veteran defender Murray Wallace has struggled for minutes this season.

Wallace has played just once for Neil Harris' side this season, a 1-0 cup defeat at home to Leyton Orient, and he's yet to feature in the league so far this season, making just one matchday squad, although he did miss the opening week or two because of an injury.

However, he's now fit again and was left out of the Lions' matchday squad for their game against Luton on Saturday, a fixture which Harris' side lost 1-0.

Wallace has been at Millwall for over six years now and has played a really important role in helping them secure their status as a stable Championship club, but his lack of minutes in the opening weeks of the season could mean that the writing is on the wall for his future at the club.

It would be no surprise if Murray Wallace left Millwall in 2025

Since joining from Scunthrope United in the summer of 2018, Wallace has become a hugely influential figure at The Den, and he's made over 200 appearances for the Lions, becoming a real fan favourite.

Just two seasons ago, he was named Milwall's Player of the Season for the 2021/22 campaign, but we all know how quickly things can change in football, and he's fallen down the pecking order at The Den.

As mentioned above, Cooper and Tanganga seem to have firmly secured their status as the club's first-choice centre-back partnership, while there are also the likes of Joe Bryan and Callum Scanlan ahead of him in the left-back pecking order, so it's difficult to see where he'll fit into Harris' plans this season.

Harris will be more than aware of what he's capable of, having brought him to the club in 2018 and working with him for a sustained period of time, but injuries and other players hitting form at the wrong time has meant that he's fallen down the pecking order at The Den.

Being able to play as a left-back and centre-back means that he'll offer some useful depth to Millwall's ranks this season, but it's difficult to envisage him playing all too regularly.

This means that it wouldn't be a surprise should Wallace depart next year, whether that be in the summer or next January.

Wallace has been an outstanding servant for the Lions in recent years, but injuries have struck at the wrong time, and it's hard to see how he regains his place as a regular starter in the Championship at this point.

Murray Wallace will want to be playing regular football at this stage of his career

At 31, Wallace won't want to be playing a bit-part role at Millwall, and may want to leave the club next year in a bid to find a club where he features on a more regular basis.

The Scotsman has shown in the past that he's more than capable of playing at Championship level, and you'd have thought there would be plenty of clubs in the division keen on his signature if the price was right.

It looks set to be a difficult couple of months for Wallace with playing time at a premium, but as we all know in football, anything can happen and all it takes is an injury or a suspension, and he could come back into the fold at The Den.

The big defender has been a great servant to Millwall, and probably won't want to leave the club, but if he continues to struggle for playing time, he may well have to leave for the sake of his career.
