Manchester City 3-0 Manchester United

Ruben Amorim admitted he must take the bulk of the criticism after his Manchester United side were brushed away 3-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

United produced a lacklustre performance against their city rivals, who went ahead through Phil Foden on 18 minutes and rarely looked troubled thereafter. Erling Haaland proceed to score twice in the second half to put Pep Guardiola’s City on their way to a comfortable victory,

United slip to 14th with four points from four matches played. Whilst the tally is somewhat skewed from having to play Arsenal and Man City in the opening four matches, the overall record under Amorim continues to draw criticism.

Amorim faced tough questions during his post-match press conference, including being asked if he accepts that a woeful Premier League record is leading to fans potentially losing faith in his ideas, particularly given his determination to stick with his 3-4-2-1 system, which has yielded 16 defeats from 31 matches so far.

“I accept that it’s not a record you should have in Manchester United,” he conceded. “There are a lot of things that happened during these months that you have no idea about, but I accept that and I am not going to change. If I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.

“We will talk about this every game that we lose. I don’t believe in that about the system or whatever. I play my way and I’m going to play my way until I want to change.

“Fans losing faith? That is normal. With the results, again, I accept that. I don’t see it that way. I see that we are doing better, but the results don’t show that. I remember last season, we played against City with my former club, we won 4-1 and it was not near the opportunities and the way we controlled the game compared to today. But in certain moments we were not better than City.

“But I understand the record says everything. My message [to the fans] is that I will give everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. The rest is not my decision. For as long as I’m here, I will do my best. I really want to win games, so I’m suffering more than them.”

“My fault”

Amorim also gave a post-match debrief to Sky Sports, where he revealed that watching his players put in the requisite amount of effort makes him less emotional in dealing with the defeat. Amorim previously made headlines last month for a dramatic series of interviews after United were knockout out of the Carling Cup by 4th-tier Grimsby.

“I didn’t see one player from my team not giving the maximum,” he said. “Then the rest is with me. What disappoints me sometimes is if I look at my team and felt like we could run more. I didn’t have that feeling. If I had that feeling, I would be okay. I’m emotional when I feel we can do better in effort. When it’s not that, it’s not their fault. So, I will be fine with that.

“Sometimes I’m emotional, sometimes I just move on and go to the next game. I know that it’s a game that’s really hard on our fans. I know that. But again, I cannot point the finger at one player for effort. With game intelligence and a lot of things, yes we can improve. But that is my fault and my part. So I’ll be okay.”
