Arne Engels reckons that Celtic will use their Hampden hurt from the Scottish Cup Final defeat to Aberdeen and also the Champions League heartache in Munich to drive Celtic on in the new season…

Engels talked about his own disappointment at missing out on the Treble as a poor performance from Celtic allowed Aberdeen the chance to take the game to extra time and penalties. Asked if that defeat still hurts Celtic’s record breaking signing said: “Yeah, 100 percent because we were all focused on getting that Treble and that was a really big disappointment, for myself and for the other boys also.

“When I went into the dressing room afterwards the mood wasn’t really there and that’s normal,”Engels said, as reported by The Herald. “You have to feel like that after such a big disappointment, but we also felt that way after the Bayern Munich game earlier in the season and in the games after that we were really good.

“So it’s up to us to get that anger into our game. Then we will see how the season moves on and it’s up to us to try and win all the games. That’s why Celtic is such a big club, to try and win all the games,” Engels said.

“Even though we had a really good season, we did really good in the Champions League and into the league, that was a bit of a disappointing end to the season. Now there is the aim for us to go for next season, so maybe that’s a good thing for us that we want to have the Treble and it’s up to us to now show that in the early games.

“We first need to get into a really good physicality to show ourselves and then, hopefully, win the first games for a good start. We will get all the boys together now and, hopefully, move forward. That’s always the aim. To go forward.”

Engels was asked if his own game can develop further this season with the experience of his debut season under his belt.

“Yeah, hopefully a lot. You always want to improve, especially as a young player. You always want to do better than the last season. I hope I will improve a lot this season and get better and do a lot for the club. That’s the aim for this season and we will see how that goes.

“I think I am my biggest critic, also. I’d say 100 percent that’s how it needs to be. That’s how you improve. I felt I had a good season and had some good numbers, so I cannot really complain about that.

“But you always want to do better. You always want to score more, assist more and so I hope I can do that and help the team more with that. It’s not just with scoring and assisting, it’s with other stuff too. There’s a lot to improve and a lot to do.”

On the summer break Engels reckons that it was much needed.

“It was a good time off,” he said. “We needed the break having played a lot of games last season and we played really good, but always the time off is really nice to get and rest the legs a little bit, but I am also really happy to be back with the boys again.

“It is a really important time to get the physicality up and to get to know all the new players too. We have a few new boys who have come into the club and we will now train altogether and see how they are. It’s always exciting to go into a new season.”
